Shallow Hal

The Farrelly brothers are back with more fatsoes and freaks, as the shallow Hal Larson (Jack Black) is hypnotized into believing that his girlfriend Rosemary (Gwyneth Paltrow) is very slim when she’s in fact big as a house. Those who like the movie embrace the message of how important it is to ignore appearances. Those who dislike the film feel that the brothers’ intentions drown in all the jokes about fat people. I tend to agree with the latter half; it’s too predictable and not that funny. Jason Alexander has his moments though, as well as a hairpiece that should be put out of its misery.

2001-U.S. 114 min. Color. Directed by Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly. Cast: Gwyneth Paltrow (Rosemary Shanahan), Jack Black (Hal Larson), Jason Alexander (Mauricio Wilson), Joe Viterelli, Rene Kirby, Bruce McGill.
