MAY THE BEST MOVES WIN.
High school student Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst) has just made captain of the cheerleading team when she learns all the routines were stolen from an East Compton hip hop squad. It may be hard to understand why cheerleading is such an important cultural phenomenon in the U.S.; this movie offers no real explanation (beyond cute girls), but has endearing qualities. Cheerleading is treated as one of the major sports and it’s essentially a reworking of Rocky (1976). Dunst is charming and it’s nice to see the battle between the girls not turn into a predictably ugly exercise.
2000-U.S. 99 min. Color. Directed by Peyton Reed. Cast: Kirsten Dunst (Torrance Shipman), Eliza Dushku (Missy Pantone), Jesse Bradford (Cliff Pantone), Gabrielle Union, Clare Kramer, Nicole Bilderback.
Trivia: Later a stage musical. Followed by four direct-to-DVD sequels, starting with Bring It On Again (2004).
