The Idiots

YOU’RE A WHOLE LOT DUMBER THAN YOU THINK.

A challenging experiment of a film telling the story of a young woman (Bodil Jørgensen) who joins a community of people who provoke their surroundings by pretending to be mentally handicapped. Director Lars von Trier follows his “Dogma 95” manifesto to a fault. He has previously found reasons to do that but not really here; the terrible look of the film becomes a problem. The antics of “the idiots” grow repetitious and Jens Albinus’s hypocrite becomes a really tiresome figure. Spirited moments here and there, mostly provided by Jørgensen.

1998-Denmark-France. 114 min. Color. Written and directed by Lars von Trier. Cast: Bodil Jørgensen (Karen), Jens Albinus (Stoffer), Louise Hassing (Susanne), Troels Lyby, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Henrik Prip.

Trivia: Original title: Idioterne. This is the second part of the director’s “Golden Heart” trilogy that began with Breaking the Waves (1996) and ended with Dancer in the Dark (2000).
