Insurance investigator C.W. Briggs (Woody Allen) is hypnotized one evening; whenever he hears the word “Constantinople” he turns into a jewel thief. Pleasurable to a certain extent, this is nevertheless one of the slowest comedies Allen has made. His love of the 1940s shows in the meticulous choices of clothes, surroundings and music and there’s a playfulness to the fact that Allen knows very well that his story is a silly one. But the comedy, the banter between him and Helen Hunt, should be dynamite and it isn’t.
