A Month by the Lake

A CHARMING, WEALTHY ENGLISH GENTLEMAN. TWO BEAUTIFUL WOMEN. IF IT ONLY TAKES A MOMENT TO FALL IN LOVE, IMAGINE WHAT CAN HAPPEN IN…

monthbythelakeIn 1937, Miss Bentley (Vanessa Redgrave), a British spinster, spends the summer in a villa on Lake Como; she falls for a major (Edward Fox), but he’s nevertheless charmed by a young American, Miss Beaumont (Uma Thurman). A pleasant, unremarkable little film from an equally unremarkable director; it might as well have been a TV movie. The story is old-fashioned and it’s hard to see what Miss Bentley finds appealing in the haughty, wooden major, but Redgrave is excellent as the freethinking spinster. Nice to see Vittorio Gassman’s son Alessandro as a charmer called Vittorio (of course).

1995-U.S. 94 min. Color. Directed by John Irvin. Novella: H.E. Bates. Cast: Vanessa Redgrave (Miss Bentley), Edward Fox (Major Wilshaw), Uma Thurman (Miss Beaumont), Alida Valli, Alessandro Gassman.
