The Pink Panther

THE PINK PANTHER DIAMOND IS MISSING… AND THE WORLD’S GREATEST DETECTIVE IS SOLVING THE CASE ONE MISTAKE AT A TIME.

The coach of the French national soccer team is murdered and his huge, famous Pink Panther diamond ring is stolen; it’s up to Inspector Clouseau (Steve Martin) to find the killer. A remake of the 1964 classic, but Hollywoodized in a negative way; the formula is tiresome, including the bumbling policeman’s pointless visit to New York. Still, it could have been worse. Martin has a few moments where he’s actually funny, and Jean Reno is a good straight man, but Kevin Kline is wasted as the arrogant Dreyfus.

2006-U.S. 93 min. Color. Directed by Shawn Levy. Screenplay: Steve Martin, Len Blum. Cast: Steve Martin (Jacques Clouseau), Kevin Kline (Charles Dreyfus), Beyoncé Knowles (Xania), Jean Reno, Emily Mortimer, Henry Czerny. Cameo: Clive Owen.

Trivia: Kevin Spacey, Mike Myers and Chris Tucker were allegedly considered for the part of Clouseau. Followed by The Pink Panther 2 (2009).
