Speed Racer

Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is following in the footsteps of his famous brother, a race car driver who was killed on the track, but when a powerful company approaches him with an offer he discovers their dirty secret. I suppose the Wachowski Brothers have a nostalgic relationship to the Japanese original. Their take on it has beautiful CGI visuals and impressive effects; ambitious… but it’s also a long, boring movie with thoroughly uninvolving racing scenes.

2008-U.S. 129 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by The Wachowski Brothers. Visual Effects: John Gaeta, and others. Cast: Emile Hirsch (Speed Racer), Christina Ricci (Trixie), Susan Sarandon (Mom Racer), John Goodman (Pops Racer), Matthew Fox, Roger Allam… Richard Roundtree.

Trivia: Johnny Depp was allegedly considered for the lead, with Alfonso Cuarón directing.
