Insidious

IT’S NOT THE HOUSE THAT’S HAUNTED.

When their young son falls into a coma, the Lamberts (Rose Byrne, Patrick Wilson) begin to notice strange, eerie events that take place in their house. Oh, it’s obvious that Saw makers James Wan and Leigh Whannell love this stuff – and a large share of the audience is also likely to get a kick out of this scary (and amusing) horror flick. In many ways, it is an irresistible homage to many old ghost movies (Poltergeist is one), shot to make it look like a distorted nightmare. The cast is game, especially Lin Shaye as the psychic. However, there’s nothing original here and the story tends to lag a bit.

2011-U.S. 103 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by James Wan. Screenplay: Leigh Whannell. Cast: Patrick Wilson (Josh Lambert), Rose Byrne (Renai Lambert), Barbara Hershey (Lorraine Lambert), Ty Simpkins, Andrew Astor, Lin Shaye.

Trivia: Followed by three sequels, starting with Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013).
