The International

theinternationalWhen a colleague is murdered, Interpol agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and a Manhattan Assistant District Attorney (Naomi Watts) intensify their investigation of a major bank that funds arms deals and terrorism all over the world. A pretty formulaic thriller from Tom Tykwer that divides its time between Germany, New York and Istanbul and addresses a very timely subject (as the all-too believable newspaper headlines in the end credits show). The story was in fact based on the real-life BCCI scandal in the 1980s. The action is well-staged, but the two leads are strictly cardboard.

2009-U.S.-Germany. 118 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Tom Tykwer. Cast: Clive Owen (Louis Salinger), Naomi Watts (Eleanor Whitman), Armin Mueller-Stahl (Wilhelm Wexler), Ulrich Thomsen, Brian F. O’Byrne, Jack McGee.
