Fright Night

YOU CAN’T RUN FROM EVIL WHEN IT LIVES NEXT DOOR.

When one of his childhood friends disappears, teenager Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finds footage proving that his new next-door neighbor (Colin Farrell) in all likelihood is a vampire. A surprisingly entertaining 3D remake of the 1985 horror-comedy that features plenty of gory fun, as well as a solid performance by Yelchin and a perfect one by Farrell as a decidedly blue-collar bloodsucker. David Tennant stands up less well to Roddy McDowall, and some of the changes to the story aren’t really worth the effort, but the movie has a darkly appealing look and evokes the original’s best sentiments.

2011-U.S. 106 min. Color. Directed by Craig Gillespie. Cast: Anton Yelchin (Charley Brewster), Colin Farrell (Jerry Dandrige), Toni Collette (Jane Brewster), David Tennant (Peter Vincent), Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Trivia: Chris Sarandon, who played the vampire in the original, has a small role. Followed by a direct-to-video sequel, Fright Night 2 (2013).
