As the world’s most famous spy celebrates 50 years as a movie star, the time has come to celebrate everything we love about him. In 22 blog posts, I’ll find something in every Bond movie, from Dr. No (1962) to Quantum of Solace (2008), that’s worth illustrating. Yes, even the bad ones.
The first clip is actually Bond’s first scene, introducing not only Sean Connery but the character himself. His response to Sylvia Trench’s (Eunice Gayson) request for his name is simple and ingenious. “Bond. James Bond.” It’s all there, the now-classic trappings. The tux, the lighting of the cigarette, Monty Norman’s theme kicking off quietly as Connery delivers his line. Doesn’t get any cooler than this.
My 2004 review of Dr. No.
