The true story about a Swedish filmmaker, a banana corporation, dirty tricks, lawsuits, manipulation and the price of free speech.
An unusual sequel as it deals with all the controversy surrounding the original movie, Bananas!* (2009). In it it was already stated that Dole, the fruit corporation that was targeted for having used illegal pesticide on banana farms in Nicaragua, had tried to stop the documentary from being distributed – and this movie chronicles the court proceedings and director Fredrik Gertten’s journey in detail. As the process turned increasingly bizarre (and offensive on the part of Dole), Gertten and the case eventually found bipartisan support in the Swedish parliament and the company chose to cancel its witch hunt. Interesting depiction of a David vs. Goliath case, but it is a bit on the dry side and could definitely have been made with greater passion.
2012-Sweden-Denmark-Germany-Britain-U.S. 87 min. Color. Directed by Fredrik Gertten.
