Side Effects

sideeffectsAfter a suicide attempt, psychiatrist Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) prescribes a new, experimental drug for Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) who’s battling depression, but it has weird side effects… What starts out as an intriguing look at psychiatry, drugs and depression turns into a standard thriller in its second half, with a twist and a lead character that could have virtually jumped out of a Hitchcock movie. Still, Steven Soderbergh handles it well; there may not be much food for thought here, but it’s slick and entertaining, with a decent enough mystery. The film has an icy look, but the cast is warmer, especially Mara.
