PACK IN THE LAUGHTER!

planestrainsAfter a business trip to New York City, Neal Page (Steve Martin) is trying to get home to his family in Chicago for Thanksgiving, but frequently gets stuck with a very loud co-traveler (John Candy)… Director John Hughes is back on the roads after National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983) for a comedy that takes great advantage of Martin and Candy’s different comic personas. There are some very funny scenes as the odd couple endures one crisis after another. Hughes doesn’t go too far when it comes to sentimentality, but rather lets the emotions give this formulaic story some substance toward the end.

1987-U.S. 93 min. Color. Produced, written and directed by John Hughes. Cast: Steve Martin (Neal Page), John Candy (Del Griffith), Laila Robins (Susan Page), Michael McKean, Kevin Bacon, Dylan Baker… Ben Stein.

Quote: “Don’t let me stand in your way, please don’t let me stand in your way. The last thing I want to be remembered as is an annoying blabbermouth… You know, nothing grinds my gears worse than some chowderhead that doesn’t know when to keep his big trap shut… If you catch me running off with my mouth, just give me a poke on the chops…” (Candy to Martin)
