This year’s Comic-Con in San Diego ended last weekend and even though I wasn’t terribly excited about it this year there were memorable panels and trailers. Even if you weren’t there, thanks to Youtube you can enjoy all of it from home. Let’s take a look.
The first trailer for the second season of Stranger Things was perhaps the best of the bunch. There are other shows I care more deeply about, but I enjoyed season one and this preview of what’s to come looks absolutely irresistible. Ingenious use of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. The show will be back on Netflix October 27th.
Ben Affleck took the chance to adress rumors about Warner considering replacing him as Batman in future movies. During the Justice League panel, he made sure fans understood that he loves playing the part. In subsequent interviews, Affleck also talked about how the demands of the role (the costume, stunts, etc) makes it hard for him to focus on directing duties, which is why Matt Reeves will be helming The Batman. True or not, it still makes sense.
This fall, two major superhero blockbusters fight for attention. They’re obviously not opening on the same weekend, but DC and Marvel are still headed for a clash with Justice League and Thor: Ragnarok. Both studios released new trailers at Comic-Con and they’re loud and fun. Wonder Woman grabs more attention in the Justice League preview, which is a no-brainer considering the success of her stand-alone movie this summer. Ragnarok looks like it’s going to be in the vein of Guardians of the Galaxy.
Apparently, there was also exciting new footage from Avengers: Infinity War, but a trailer has yet to appear online.
Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling looked like they had a great time together. They were in San Diego to promote the upcoming Blade Runner 2049, but they also found time to be goofy together, as in this Variety clip.
The History Channel wanted to raise eyebrows a bit, so they had themselves a nice little viking funeral, complete with a burning ship. All to promote the next season of their show Vikings.
In September, there will be a new Star Trek series on CBS. This trailer shows off Sonequa Martin-Green in the lead, but also James Frain who will play Sarek, Spock’s father. Right now, there is reason to be more excited about Star Trek: Discovery than a fourth Star Trek movie.
Two bloody shows also gave us previews of upcoming seasons. Westworld we don’t know much about yet, but the trailer offers footage of what is going on after the major events of the first season’s last episodes. As for The Walking Dead, that’s a very action-packed trailer. The final shot teases us with the prospect of a time-jump.
Last but definitely not least – as always, San Diego was packed with fans in amazing costumes. This collection is truly awesome.
