American Made

In the late 1970s, TWA pilot Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) quits his job after being recruited by the CIA to fly secret missions over Latin American countries; eventually, he’s also hired by the Medellín Cartel. Doug Liman reunited with Cruise after Edge of Tomorrow (2014) for a fanciful and breezy adaptation of a real-life story about a pilot who smuggled drugs for the Colombians and arms to Nicaragua for the Reagan administration. In this version, Seal becomes an comically busy adventurer, and Cruise is certainly the right person for the part. Lightweight but fun, with amusing period details and a George W. Bush ”cameo”.

2017-U.S. 115 min. Color. Directed by Doug Liman. Cast: Tom Cruise (Barry Seal), Domhnall Gleeson (Monty Schafer), Sarah Wright (Lucy Seal), Jayma Mays, Jesse Plemons, Lola Kirke.

Trivia: Co-produced by Ron Howard. Seal was also portrayed in the TV movie Doublecrossed (1991) and the feature film The Infiltrator (2016).
