Fifty Shades Darker

Some time after breaking up with Christian (Jamie Dornan), Ana (Dakota Johnson) agrees to renegotiate their relationship… but a mysterious woman (Kim Basinger) from Christian’s past shows up. The sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) was helmed by an old pro at steamy thrillers, but it’s hard to generate tension when the characters are this empty and predictable. The sex is lushly photographed, but its BDSM ingredients just as vanilla as in the original. Basinger is wasted in a story that is basically a setup for the third film.
