NEVER LET HER OUT OF YOUR SIGHT. NEVER LET YOUR GUARD DOWN. NEVER FALL IN LOVE.
Former Secret Service agent Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner) is hired to serve as bodyguard to a popular singer (Whitney Houston), who initially is more annoyed with his presence than anything else… For Houston’s feature film debut, they took a script that had been lying around since the 1970s, updated it and brought on Costner who was at the height of his success. Slickly produced, where Houston’s own music serves to reinforce the impression of her character as a major star. The depiction of her romance with Costner is childish and hard to believe but still engaging; the rendition of Dolly Parton’s ”I Will Always Love You” is outstanding.
1992-U.S. 129 min. Color. Directed by Mick Jackson. Screenplay: Lawrence Kasdan. Songs: ”I Have Nothing” (David Foster, Linda Thompson), ”Run to You” (Jud Friedman, Allan Rich). Trivia: Co-produced by Costner and Kasdan. When the story was considered in the 1970s, acting choices included first Diana Ross and Steve McQueen, then Ross and Ryan O’Neal. Remade in Hong Kong as The Defender (1994).
