Grumpy Old Men

THE BEST OF ENEMIES UNTIL SOMETHING CAME BETWEEN THEM.

Two retired old ”friends” (Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau) spend their days in a small Minnesota town arguing and playing pranks on each other… but then a seductive, worldly woman (Ann-Margret) becomes a new neighbor. Seeing the two stars back together again for the first time since Buddy Buddy (1981) is a pleasure, even if their characters have been more or less reduced to caricatures. They do what they can; Burgess Meredith and Ann-Margret are also fun as Lemmon’s horny father and the vivacious Ariel. Thin but amusing film, with the wintry location serving as a symbol of thawing emotions.

1993-U.S. 104 min. Color. Directed by Donald Petrie. Cast: Jack Lemmon (John Gustafson, Jr.), Walter Matthau (Max Goldman), Ann-Margret (Ariel Truax), Burgess Meredith, Daryl Hannah, Kevin Pollak… Ossie Davis.

Trivia: Followed by Grumpier Old Men (1995).
