TERROR IS BUILDING.
In 1906, doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) is hired to visit Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren) and assess her mental state; the widow of a famous gun manufacturer has spent years overlooking the seemingly never-ending construction of a mansion in San Jose, California. The Spierig Brothers may know how to put together an exciting vampire movie (Daybreakers (2010)), but ghosts turned out to be a greater challenge. Based on a true story (well, not the supernatural part), this film fails to create much tension or instill fear in us. It’s no match for The Haunting (1963), in spite of the two stars and an intriguing setup.
2018-U.S.-Australia. 99 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by The Spierig Brothers. Cast: Helen Mirren (Sarah Winchester), Jason Clarke (Eric Price), Sarah Snook (Marian Marriott), Finn Scicluna-O’Prey, Angus Sampson, Laura Brent.
