K-9

MEET THE TWO TOUGHEST COPS IN TOWN.

San Diego cop Michael Dooley (James Belushi) refuses to take a partner in his hunt for a drug lord (Kevin Tighe)… but chooses a police dog, who’s not an easy fit. The same year as we saw Turner & Hooch came another comedy about a cop and his lovable dog. Jerry Lee is a big German Shepherd who’s a pretty amusing match for the loud, disheveled star; since his partner doesn’t talk it’s primarily up to Belushi to keep things lively. In spite of a hopelessly formulaic and silly story, we do begin to care a little bit about the duo after a while.

1989-U.S. 102 min. Color. Directed by Rod Daniel. Cast: James Belushi (Michael Dooley), Mel Harris (Tracy), Kevin Tighe (Lyman), Ed O’Neill, James Handy, Cotter Smith.

Trivia: Followed by two direct-to-video sequels, starting with K-911 (1999).
